ORF Contribution
Information for tenants with a primary or secondary residence in Austria
About the ORF Contribution
In Austria, a public broadcasting contribution (ORF-Beitrag) is payable for each primary residence. The ORF Contribution is collected by the ORF Contribution Service (OBS). The fee is due independent of television or radio ownership. More informationen is available on the OBS website.
If you register a property as your secondary residence (Nebenwohnsitz), the ORF Contribution is not payable. In this case, no further action is required.
Who has to pay?
The ORF fee is payable per household, not per person. If several adults register the same address as their primary residence, only one contribution is payable for that address.
Registering for the ORF contribution
No separate registration is requied. Your primary residence details are automatically transmitted from the Central Register of Residents (ZMR) to the OBS. As soon as at least one adult is registered at an address as their primary residence, the contribution becomes payable. The payment request is issued automatically.
Deregistering the ORF contribution
If the property has been registered as a secondary residence, no further action is required.
If the property has been registered as a primary residence, the ORF contribution will generally be adjusted or cancelled automatically once you deregister your residence with the local registration authority. The authority forwards the updated registration details to the OBS.
However, if you are moving abroad permanently, you should notify the OBS directly. In the OBS contact form, select "Umzug ins Ausland" ("moving abroad") as the subject. It is recommended that you upload a copy of your deregistration confirmation from the registration authority.
Please note: The ORF Contribution is paid in advance. If you have paid more than required, any overpayment is normally refunded on a pro-rata basis.
